The future of social media application development

Since the release of the Facebook API in 2007, Social media application development has exponentially gained traction each year. With games playing a heavy role in monopolizing a large amount of time spent on popular social media platforms such as Facebook and MySpace, these applications have gone from being small time killers to full fledged marketing tools.

Nowadays, social media applications can be used to run entire digital marketing campaigns, basing sweepstakes, giveaways, contests and more around a branded application that can take user opinions, insights, create engaging environments such as games and more. With the users provided incentives such as the possibility to win free prizes, they have nothing to lose and often choose to enter the contests.

Since 2009, the concept of virtual economies began to gain momentum and social media applications; especially Facebook application development became a great way to monetize web applications. With third party offers providers such as OfferPal and SuperRewards giving social media application developers excellent payouts for users who fill out their offers (usually in the nature of surveys), application developers began to create hurdles in their games that could only be overcome through a certain advantage, which could only be bought through a virtual currency which would be gained by completing the offers.

In the first half of 2010 we have seen the release of Facebook Credits, the official Facebook virtual currency of choice. Virtual currency is on track to see it’s biggest year ever in 2010 and the predictions show that this is only the beginning. It is safe to say that the future of social media applications development is very strong as a lot of big companies are beginning to buy out smaller development companies in order to get their products developed and deployed on the social media networks.
